Internet gaming disorder behaviours: a preliminary exploration of individualism and collectivism profiles

Abstract Background Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) behaviours involve excessive use of games to the extent that one’s everyday life is compromised. It has been suggested IGD symptoms are dependent on whether one more individualistic or collectivistic. However, range potential individualism-collectivismeffects presentations remains largely unknown. The current study aims further understanding role and collectivistic tendencies in IGD, allowing us develop gamer centredIGD prevention intervention strategies. Methods One thousand thirty-twocommunity participants withinternet gaming experience were measured online for symptom’s severity using Scale – Short Form (IGDS9-SF) andindividualism-collectivism behavioursvia Individualism & Collectivism (ICS). Latent Class Analysis (LCA) T-Tests performed relation their responses. Results Upon inspection LCA output, two profiles internet gamers identified. These includedthe Aversivegamers (CA; 11%) Neutral (CN; 89%). CA displayed significantly higher overall, and, inpreoccupation, withdrawal symptoms, tolerance, relapse, deception, escapism/mood modification, functional impairment compared CN gamers. There no differences between loss interest conflicts with others. Conclusions findings suggest individualism-collectivism orientation can influence presentation IGD.
